Himachal Pradesh strings together three very different mountain towns: Shimla, the former summer capital of British India with its Mall Road and toy train; Manali, gateway to apple-orchard valleys and high passes; and Dharamshala, home to the Dalai Lama and Tibet's government-in-exile. The drives between them are half the point — pine forests, terraced hillsides and snow-capped ridgelines the whole way.
Arrive and settle in. Walk Mall Road and the Ridge, and consider the narrow-gauge toy train from Kalka as a scenic add-on.
