Overview

Tamil Nadu holds some of the largest and most intricately carved temple complexes in the world, their gopuram gateway towers rising in tiers of painted sculpture over entire cities. This trail moves from Madurai's Meenakshi Temple through the Chola-era masterpiece at Thanjavur to Pondicherry's French Quarter, a very different, coastal counterpoint at the end.

Trip Highlights

  • The Meenakshi Amman Temple's painted gopurams in Madurai
  • Thanjavur's Brihadeeswarar Temple, a Chola-dynasty UNESCO site
  • The Tanjore painting and bronze-casting workshops of Thanjavur
  • Pondicherry's French Quarter, with its colonial villas and seafront promenade
  • Traditional Tamil vegetarian thali meals along the way

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a dress code for the temples?

Yes — shoulders and knees covered, shoes removed before entering; some inner sanctums restrict entry to Hindus, which our guides will flag in advance.

What's Pondicherry like compared to the rest of Tamil Nadu?

Distinctly different — a former French colonial port with a slower, cafe-lined pace, a useful contrast after the temple towns.

Can we visit Auroville?

Yes, it's a short drive from Pondicherry; access to the inner Matrimandir meditation chamber requires advance booking, which we can arrange.
