Varanasi is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, and its riverfront ghats are best understood from the water — a slow rowboat past bathers, cremation rites and temple spires at dawn. This short circuit pairs Varanasi with Bodh Gaya, where the Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Tree, a natural extension for travellers drawn to India's spiritual geography.
Settle in along the ghats. In the evening, watch the Ganga Aarti fire ceremony at Dashashwamedh Ghat.
